Unfolding Gender Discrimination in Education: The Case of Female Children in Northern Nigeria

Abstract

Gender discrimination is a significant issue affecting women and young girls worldwide. This article examines the causes of gender discrimination within the Gbagyi community in Abuja, Northern Nigeria, and its impact on the education of female children. Using focus group discussions, the main finding reveals the extent to which women and girls in this region face various forms of discrimination, including limited access to education and cultural practices that perpetuate gender-based stereotypes. The research also highlights the role of family, cultural, and societal norms in prioritizing the education of boys over girls, leading to gender disparities in education within the Gbagyi community. Challenges faced by female children in accessing education include early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and household responsibilities. These obstacles limit their educational opportunities, perpetuating a cycle of poverty and inequality. In conclusion, addressing the underlying causes of gender discrimination and promoting education for all can create a more equitable and just society that values the contributions of all its members, regardless of gender.
